School Social Services

Academic Counseling

Academic counseling, also known as academic advising, is a process that helps students navigate their academic and professional paths.

Academic counselors can help students:

  • Set goals: Create degree objectives and decide on a major

  • Meet requirements: Understand how to fulfill requirements and keep up with deadlines

  • Plan their studies: Select classes and learn about coursework for different degree programs

  • Make changes: Request course or major changes

  • Get support: Receive institutional support and help with financial aid

  • Prepare for college: Get ready for learning beyond the classroom

School Social Worker

School social workers help students succeed academically by providing services that address their mental and behavioral health, family needs, and other issues.

School Social Workers can help:

  • Counseling: School social workers offer individual and group counseling to help students build relationships and develop strategies to manage issues like bullying, anger, and family crises.

  • Assessment: School social workers conduct biopsychosocial assessments to evaluate students' physical, emotional, and mental health.

  • Crisis intervention: School social workers act quickly to help students who are at risk or experiencing violence or bullying.

  • Family support: School social workers interview families and help them support their child's needs in school.

  • Advocacy: School social workers advocate for students, teachers, and families to school administration and the community.

  • Policy formation: School social workers help form school discipline policies.

  • Community involvement: School social workers facilitate community involvement in schools.
